Australia's path to a sustainable future has reached a major milestone with the official commencement of the Net Zero Economy Authority (the Authority). This pivotal development follows the successful passage and royal assent of its legislation, and proclamation by the Governor-General.
The Net Zero Economy Authority Board has also been established. This experienced group will steer the Authority’s efforts to invest in workers and communities, paving the way for a Future Made in Australia. This follows the recent appointment of David Shankey as the Authority's inaugural Chief Executive Officer.
The appointed members are Chair Dr Iain Ross AO, Mr Tony Maher, Mr Mike Mrdak AO, Ms Michele O'Neil, Professor Robynne Quiggin, Ms Anna Skarbek, and Ms Zoe Whitton.
Board members were selected based on their deep collective experience across regional development, the trade union movement, business, industry, Indigenous advocacy and climate policy.
"I congratulate the Board members on their appointments and look forward to working with them to realise the benefits of a Future Made in Australia," said Assistant Minister for a Future Made in Australia Tim Ayres
The Authority will be pivotal to delivering Australia’s net zero economic transformation and supporting workers and regions through change.
"The Net Zero Economy Authority Board will play a crucial role in setting the strategy and focus for the Authority, providing their expertise to ensure we fully realise the benefits of global decarbonisation.
"Under the guidance of the Board, the Net Zero Economy Authority will ensure the shift to net zero emissions by 2050 happens fairly for all Australians, including in our regions at the frontline of the transition,” said Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen.
The path to net zero is a shared journey, and success will depend on robust partnerships between government, industry, and the community. The Authority’s aim is to bring together diverse voices and expertise, ensuring that people are at the centre of the transition to net zero.
“Today’s commencement marks a significant step in the Albanese Government’s plan to support energy intensive regions to industrialise with new manufacturing and good jobs. The Board’s vast experience will ensure that the Net Zero Economy Authority is securing the investment needed in our regions as industries decarbonise, creating and protecting local manufacturing jobs.” Assistant Minister for a Future Made in Australia Tim Ayres
