Working with affected communities

Supporting Australia’s regional communities to respond to the challenges and opportunities of the transition to net zero.

The regions we are working with

Our regions of focus have long and proud histories as industrial powerhouses.

They are ideal centres for emerging green industries thanks to their existing infrastructure and skilled workers. We recognise for many, much of their history is built on the workforce of traditional power generation. That's why the Australian Government is helping existing workers and communities navigate the energy system change – supporting workers to reskill and move to new opportunities.

We are supporting regions by:

  • coordinating worker transition supports and facilitating investment in new and decarbonised industries
  • supporting First Nations people to effectively engage in, and benefit from, the net zero economic transformation
  • coordinating and delivering transformative regional supports and projects.

All regions are likely to undergo change as Australia’s energy system evolves, however our early focus is on the regions that are already undergoing transformation or will be imminently.

Our selection of focus regions was informed by an analytical framework, underpinned by data and literature, developed by the Net Zero Economy Agency. The framework provided the evidence of regions at higher risk from net zero transition and with the greatest potential to harness economic opportunities from decarbonisation.
