Our vision
Regions, workers and communities most affected by Australia’s transition to a net zero emissions economy are empowered to anticipate and respond to the risks and opportunities of the transition.
We're working across government, engaging with First Nations people and local communities, and with industry to support Australia's regions through this change.
Australia's net zero economic transformation
Australia is undergoing an economic transformation as we reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
To achieve net zero emissions by 2050, the economic change means that we will be expanding our energy system and switching from coal-fired power to renewable energy, like wind and solar power, bringing new energy to homes and businesses.
The Australian Government is working with regional communities to seize these economic opportunities - and to ensure that the benefits are fairly shared.
How Australia will reach net zero
Agencies across government are working together to support Australia's transition to net zero by 2050. The transition encompasses all major parts of the economy - electricity and energy, transport, industry and waste, agriculture and land, resources and the built environment. The Australian Government's Net Zero Plan(Opens in a new tab/window) will set out government priorities and initiatives to drive down emissions.
The Net Zero Plan will be accompanied by sector plans for key parts of the economy which will outline the role of each sector in supporting Australia’s transition to net zero.
The Climate Change Authority(Opens in a new tab/window) provides expert advice to the Australian Government on climate change policy. In 2024, the Climate Change Authority is advising government on Australia’s 2035 emissions reduction targets.
