David Shankey serves as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the Net Zero Economy Authority, appointed on 29 November 2024. In this role, he leads a dedicated team of 150 professionals committed to supporting Australia’s regions and communities through the transition to a net zero emissions economy.
Prior to this appointment, Mr Shankey was the Deputy Director-General at Queensland’s Department of Energy and Public Works. In this capacity, he spearheaded the development of Queensland’s 10-year Energy and Jobs Plan, a transformative strategy aimed at transitioning the state from coal-fired to renewable energy generation within a decade and achieving a 90% reduction in electricity sector carbon emissions by 2035. His leadership was instrumental in positioning Queensland as a global leader in energy reform, notably through successful negotiations with energy trade unions and the establishment of the Queensland Energy Workers Charter.
Before his tenure as Deputy Director-General, Mr Shankey served as Executive Director in the Energy division for four years, overseeing Strategic Policy and Renewables. His diverse professional background also includes experience in the resources sector and the media industry.
Under Mr Shankey’s guidance, the Authority plays a pivotal role in Australia’s decarbonisation journey. The Authority collaborates with communities, governments, regional bodies, unions, industry stakeholders, investors, and First Nations groups to ensure inclusive participation in the benefits arising from the global shift to net zero emissions.
Mr Shankey’s extensive experience in energy and climate policy, combined with his commitment to community-centric reforms, positions him as a key leader in driving Australia’s transition to a sustainable and prosperous net zero economy.
