Torrens submission process wraps up

Last updated: 12 Mar 2025

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Authority’s public consultation process on the scheduled closure of Torrens Island Power Station.

We received several written submissions, which you can access below.

From 3-6 February, the Authority visited Adelaide to meet stakeholders in person. This included a site visit to the Torrens Island facility to meet AGL management and the Transition Working Group. We also heard directly from workers during an information session led by Authority CEO David Shankey.

We held productive meetings with union representatives, the South Australian Business Chamber, South Australian Government officials, and local businesses that may be interested in employing Torrens workers after the closure, currently scheduled for June 2026.

We are now reviewing all the information gathered to inform the CEO's decision on whether the Energy Industry Jobs Plan should be implemented for this closure. The Energy Industry Jobs Plan (EIJP) provides support to workers when eligible coal-fired and gas-fired power stations close.

If the EIJP is deemed necessary,  the next step will be to apply to the Fair Work Commission (FWC) for a determination. The FWC will then conduct its process, including providing key stakeholders with an opportunity to be heard. If the FWC makes a determination, this will formally establish an EIJP for Torrens, outlining the types of supports that included employers must provide to their employees.

If you have any further questions about the EIJP or the consultation process, please contact our team at EIJP@pmc.gov.au.
