As Australia transitions to net zero, regional communities play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s economic future.
Significant investment will drive new industries and job opportunities, particularly in key industrial regions: Collie, Gladstone, the Hunter, Latrobe Valley, the Pilbara, and Upper Spencer Gulf.
These regions have been chosen for their deep industrial roots and the impact decarbonisation will have on their economies. The Australian Government is committed to ensuring that workers and communities in these areas are supported through this transition, with opportunities to reskill, adapt, and thrive in emerging industries.
The approach is tailored to each region’s unique strengths and challenges, developed in close collaboration with local communities and stakeholders. Transparency, ongoing engagement, and partnership are central to ensuring a just transition for all.
A regional approach that works
To support these communities, the Authority is:
- administering the Energy Industry Jobs Plan to support workers affected by coal-fired power station closures
- developing Regional Worker Transition Plans with tailored employment and skills support
- driving investment in emissions-intensive regions to facilitate new industries and economic opportunities
- building confidence and engagement in the net zero transformation and
- ensuring First Nations communities have a seat at the table and benefit from new opportunities.
To guide its efforts, the Authority has developed a comprehensive Regional Identification Framework, ensuring government policies and investments are directed where they are needed most.
